Autor: prof. univ. dr. Silviu NEGUȚ

The Simion Mehedinți, mainly known as geographer, was in fact a polyvalent
personality, bringing essential contributions in many fields. As geographer and founder of the
first Romanian Geography Department at the University of Bucharest (in 1900) he created the
Romanian geography school, published representative studies and given the best, simplest and
most relevant definition of geography. He also shined in fields such as: ethnography, recently
one of his biographers discovered and published the „Ethnos” manuscript, seen by the great
scientist as a counterweight for „Terra”; science philosophy, clarifying the place of nature and
human sciences through philosophical interpretations; education and pedagogy, Mehedinți
having a natural inclination to guiding young people and the school on the path of an education
according to the specific Romanian way, developing the idea of a „school of work”; geopolitics,
making a clear distinction between this and political geography and approaching the nationstate
issue in relation with its surroundings; literature and geographical description, Mehedinți
reflecting his native literary talent in his entire scientific work as well as in his entire literary
work (including his descriptions of nature); founder and editor of magazines: „Dumineca
Poporului”, „Buletinul Societății Române Regale de Geografie”, „Convorbiri literare”.
